All Woman Led Sisterhood Shabbat Service, honoring Johnna Freud as Woman of the Year, to be held on Saturday May 16Published: Tuesday, April 21, 2015 By: Suzanne Newman
Sisterhood GHC will be having its annual Sisterhood Shabbat, honoring Johnna Freud as Woman of the Year, at 9:30 am on Saturday May 16 at Greenburgh Hebrew Center in Dobbs Ferry, NY. GHC is an egalitarian synagogue where women are routinely included in all aspects of Jewish observance, but, Sisterhood Shabbat is a special celebration of how far Jewish women have come. All the parts of the service, including leading the service and reading Torah, are performed by women.
Johnna Freud has been active at Greenburgh Hebrew Center for almost six years. She has been involved with Sisterhood since 2012, accepting the position of VP of Programming in 2013. As she has done for the past three Sisterhood Shabbats, Johnna will once again deliver the D’var Torah and D’var Haftorah at this year’s Sisterhood Shabbat. In addition to her Sisterhood responsibilities, Johnna has helped behind the scenes when needed with Hanukkah Dinners, post high holiday cleanup, photography, and has recently been invited to join the Membership Committee. She has also marched in the last two Israel Day parades with the GHC contingent. A New Jersey native and Stamford, CT resident since 1995, Johnna is the Director of Development & Community Engagement for Jewish Family Service (JFS). She spearheads fundraising initiatives and donor relations for JFS, a non-sectarian social service agency, which is headquartered in Stamford and has a catchment area from Stamford up through and including Bridgeport. Johnna is a graduate of Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, a focused two-year program that provides access to comprehensive Jewish literacy through the study of classic Jewish texts and a lifetime member of Hadassah. She has also volunteered time for United Jewish Federation programs, particularly as multi-year member of the committee responsible for Tapestry, the annual evening of Jewish Community learning and a solicitor on the phones at Super Sunday.
