Cantor Janet Leuchter joins Greenburgh Hebrew Center!!
Cantor Janet Leuchter is GHC's new cantor, and she is delighted to be a part of this warm and haymish community. Cantor Janet loves interacting with people of all ages. She looks forward to supporting
the GHC community in singing and prayer, involving congregants in the rich treasures of Jewish music past and present, and sharing times of joy as well as sorrow.
A native of Vineland, New Jersey, Cantor Janet has lived in NYC for many years. She is known for her involvement as a performer and teacher of Yiddish songs. Active in the early years of the klezmer revival, she was the vocalist with the pioneering women's band Klez-meydlekh and has taught at the Yiddish Folk Arts Program ("Klez-Kamp") and other national festivals. She has appeared in many well-known NYC venues, such as Lincoln Center Outdoors, 92nd Street Y, and City Winery, and throughout North America.
A classically trained mezzo-soprano, she has sung in concert, oratorio and opera in the metropolitan area. She has performed with trail-blazing playwright/ directors Maria Irene Fornes and Elizabeth Swados, and composed the music for Fornes' Obie-award-winner Eyes on the Harem.
She can be heard on Zumerteg-a CD of Yiddish songs by National Heritage Award-winning songwriter Bella Gottesman--as well as on the soundtracks of several acclaimed documentaries, including Partisans of Vilna. She is also the featured cantor on the CD Dancing with the Dead-the Music of Global Death Rites, on Ellipsis Arts.
Cantor Janet is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (majoring in history). She was invested as a cantor by the Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion in 1999, where she earned a Masters in
Sacred Music. Since then she has served Congregation Beth Elohim (Park Slope, Brooklyn) and Temple Avodah (Oceanside, NY). She recently completed a half-unit of supervised chaplaincy at Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Medical Center, and currently serves on the Budget and Continuing Cantorial Professional Development committees of the American Conference of Cantors.
Cantor Janet Leuchter will be installed on Friday evening, December 3, at 6:30 pm during our "Blue Jean" Shabbat services. December 3rd is also the 3rd night of Hanukkah and the synagogue's annual Shabbat Hanukkah dinner will take place that evening, following services. (A Hanukkah celebration and dinner for young families will take place before services beginning at 5:15 pm.)
