GHC Scholars in Residence Weekend with Dr. David Stern &
Dr. Kathryn Hellerstein Friday to Sunday March 17 –19

-- Dr. Hellerstein will introduce us to Classical Yiddish Women's Prayers and the ancient people who inspired them. After our Kiddish Luncheon she will bring us up to date on how women are changing the siddur through poetry and liturgy as she talks about  Jewish Poets/Jewish Prayers during Finish Strong.


David SternDr. DAVID STERN is the Harry Starr Professor of Classical and Modem Jewish and Hebrew Literature at Harvard with a B.A. from Columbia and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Harvard. David has served as a Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Princeton University, and Nanjing University. The overall subject of Professor Stem's scholarly work is the history of Jewish literary creativity within its larger historical and cultural contexts, and he has written articles, essays, and books on works from virtually every period of Jewish literary history from the early post-Biblical to the contemporKathryn Hellersteinary.

Dr. KATHRYN HELLERSTEIN is the Associate Professor of Germanic Languages at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as the former Undergraduate Director of the Jewish Studies Program. A poet, translator, and scholar of Yiddish poetry, Dr. Hellerstein received her doctorate from Stanford University. Her many scholarly articles on Yiddish literature, and most recently, on women poets in Yiddish, are published in journals, anthologies, and encyclopedias.
