On Sunday, July 1, 2012, you are invited to join this year’s Camp Greenburgh for a guided walk through the Kensico Cemetery with Rabbi Kenter.  We will also take a look at some of the monumental stone structures designated as tombs and family mausoleums, showing the influence and impact of Romanesque, Gothic, and Art Deco design. First will be morning minyan, followed by Bible and Bagels and then our visit to Kensico. We’ll be talking about Space and Place.  Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to marvel at the beauty of the place and the sanctity of the space.

The Kensico Cemetery was founded in 1889 in Valhalla when many of the cemeteries in New York City were filling up; several rural cemeteries were founded near the railroads that served the City. It is the final resting place of the actress Billie Burke, who played Glinda, the "Good Witch of the North", in the classic film The Wizard of Oz, and her husband Florenz Ziegfeld.  Also interred within Kensico Cemetery and Gate of Heaven Cemetery are the big band leader Tommy Dorsey; the New Yorker cartoonist Peter Arno; the former CBS News president Fred Friendly; the legendary New York Yankees star Lou Gehrig; the film star and comedian Danny Kaye and his wife, Sylvia Fine Kaye; the virtuoso pianist, composer, and conductor, Sergei Rachmaninoff; the author Ayn Rand; NBC founder David Sarnoff.  Also buried at Kensico are Henri Bendel and Paul Bonwit, Herbert Lehman and Soupy Sales.  Robert Merrill, Beverly Sills and Paddy Chayefsky are buried at Sharon Gardens.
